My Equipment

Sony α7R IV

The a7R IV is the workhorse in my camera kit. Seamless performance and a whopping 61mp sensor providing incredible detail. The weather sealing is also meant to be excellent and so far that claim holds up. And that viewfinder is a delight.

Sony α7 III

The a7iii serves as my dedicated astrophotography body. While the riv is a no-brainer during daylight hours, its 61mp sensor is not overly noise tolerant after dark. That’s when the a7iii comes into play. Low light performance of its 24mp sensor far exceeds anything I’d expect a camera of this price category to handle. ISO 10,000? Totally within the realm of its abilities.

The perfect all-rounder. Especially on a large sensor camera such as the Sony a7r iv. Versatility (and sharpness!) of this lens is off the charts. I replaced an f2.8 standard zoom range lens with this one and haven’t looked back.

Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS

My astro-photography go-to. Unbelievable performance even at f1.4. The first time I placed this lens on my camera and shot an exposure at night I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. This piece of glass completely changed my approach towards capturing the night sky.

Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM

The latest addition to my kit and a replacement of my original wide-angle zoom, which was the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8. I rarely shot the Tamron wide open (since I prefer prime lenses for any form of astrophotography) and was keen to expand my wide-angle’s versatility with the much broader focal range. This new 16-35mm is unbelievably lightweight, making it a great choice for multi-day hikes.

Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS

All things considered, at 1.135kg Sigma’s 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary is a relatively light super-tele lens. Does that make it a good choice for multi-day hiking? Not really. Does it come along with me on every adventure nonetheless? Absolutely! I’ve captured some of my favourite shots with this piece of glass and simply cannot get myself to leave it at home. The compression alone is something to behold.

Benro Series 4 Mach3 Carbon Fiber

I’m proud to be an ambassador for www.maxxum.com.au where I represent Benro tripods (along with Shimoda backpacks). I’ve got extensive experience with this tripod and have only positive things to say about this beast of a piece of kit. Sure, it’s not necessarily the right choice for hard multi-day hikes. But given its enormous size weighing in at just under 3kg is truly mind-blowing. Seriously, this tripod is huge and with that unbelievably sturdy.

You can get a 10% discount on Benro products (along with everything else at www.maxxum.com.au) by using the code ‘OW10’.

I prefer working with screw-on filters over larger square ones due to their ease of use and smaller footprint in my backpack. This KASE set was quite pricey, but the glass is incredibly high quality, highly durable, and the magnetic functionality is just beautiful: I love using these filters.

DJI Mavic 3

I’ve owned DJI’s Mavic range ever since the m1. Then upgraded to the Mavic 2 Pro in 2019 and then recently to the Mavic 3. So far all I can say is that it’s clearly one hell of a drone. But I need to get some more flight time under my belt to really understand what this drone is about and how I can squeeze the most out of it.

I’m an ambassador for www.maxxum.com.au representing Shimoda (along with Benro) as one my dedicated brands. Shimoda backpacks are outstanding for their ruggedness, comfort, and overall usability as an outdoor photographer. I wouldn’t support these packs as an ambassador, if I wasn’t 100% convinced of the value they bring to my life as a photographer.

I use the 50L version for my local day to day shooting here in Tasmania. The 40L Action X40 v2 comes on the plane with me. And the 70L Action X70 is my setup for overnight- and multi-day hikes.

Shimoda Action X50 v2

This may seem like a silly mention in my camera kit, but this clip changed the way I hike. Camera equipment gets heavy over hours of hiking. And this nifty little device allows me to keep my hands free, while keeping the camera in immediate reach.

Anyone who’s met me knows my internal compass is a joke. I’ll get lost walking from the front door to the car. So for the sake of finding my way around the great outdoors, I’ve invested in this brilliant piece of equipment, the Garmin Fenix 6X Pro. Topographic maps and accurate route tracking for the win!

Benro Cyanbird Carbon Fibre Tripod

I’m an ambassador for Maxxum where I represent Shimoda Designs and Benro tripods. And this recent release, the Benro Cyanbird with Hybrid Head, was given to me to try out and see how well it fits into my workflow. At a ridiculously low 1kg (!!!) only, this tripod is certainly interesting to someone who goes on long walks with heavy packs.

You can also get an extra 10% off when using my discount code ‘OW10’ during checkout. (That applies to all items on Maxxum’s website btw.)
